God’s Promises in Prayer
“The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).
Have you ever made a promise you couldn’t keep? I know I have and have felt terrible! But God always keeps His promises. God’s promises in prayer focus on the confidence believers have when approaching Him—not because of our perfection, but because of His character and His Word:
“God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill” (Numbers 23:19).
“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).
What gives us confidence to pray is not our ability to say the right words, but God’s promises. Consider these thoughts for God’s Word:
Hebrews 10:23 encourages us to “hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.”
Joshua 21:45 declares that every good promise made to Israel was fulfilled: “Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to the house of Israel failed.”
2 Corinthians 1:20 highlights that all of God’s promises find their fulfillment in Christ: “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ.”
These promises remind us that God is listening. He is not distant or distracted. Every whispered prayer, every tearful cry, every silent burden brought before Him matters. Sometimes God answers immediately. Sometimes He answers differently than we expect. Sometimes He asks us to wait. But His promises remain firm: He hears, He cares, He responds, and He works all things for His purposes. Knowing this gives us confidence.
Knowing God’s love for us, let’s possess the peace that comes from our confidence that God knows our needs and keeps his promises. “In everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6–7).
